President's Welcome Message 2014-15

Welcome to the 2014 – 2015 Concert Season!

And welcome to our 37th season supporting fine arts programs in our award-winning school district.  We are the Westborough Fine Arts Education Association – WFAEA – a parent and community sponsored non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

WFAEA is committed to the sustainability of our fine arts programs, by helping teachers and staff deliver a quality experience for your children. The importance of arts in education continues to gain ground, yet creating these opportunities for our youth is regularly challenged, due to competing curricula demands and perpetual budget constraints.

WFAEA exists to support and promote our district’s programs in theatre, visual arts, dance, and both vocal and instrumental ensembles.  We advocate, fundraise and volunteer for students and staff of all fine arts programs, and across all grade levels.

The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has recognized Westborough Public Schools as One of the Best Communities for Music Education for the fifth consecutive year, and eight times in the past 15 years.

In 2014, 9 visual arts students received 11 recognitions from The Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  58 high school students were accepted to the 2013 Central District Massachusetts Music Educators (CDMMEA) Music Festival.  Of these, 34 received a recommendation to audition for the MMEA All-State Festival and 16, a record number for Westborough, participated in All-State concerts at Boston Symphony Hall.  Five WHS musicians performed in Nashville, Tennessee with the 2013 NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles sponsored by the National Association for Music Education.

These honors and awards continue to be made possible year after year, thanks to the time and energy -- and strong foundations they’ve help build – given by the Fine Arts staff in all of our K -12 schools.

WFAEA provides a wide variety of both in-kind and financial support to the fine arts programs.  Examples include chaperoning local and national field trips, providing meals to students during concerts and theatre programs, building sets, and selling concessions during concerts and shows. Financial support takes the form of senior scholarships, sponsoring fine arts clinicians, and helping offset costs for student involvement in programs through the student activity fund.

We also receive tremendous support from our local community, also in the form of both financial and in-kind donations.  Eight scholarships were provided by Brian Marino of the Dunkin’ Donuts/Marino Organization and many local businesses and patrons contributed by purchasing advertising in our concert ad book. Green Thumb donated flowers for events; VIP cleaners, Westborough Laundromat and Edgar Mazariegos helped clean all our uniforms and concert wear.   Roche Bros., Westborough House of Pizza, Arturo’s, Tavolino’s, Wegmans and Stop & Shop helped feed our students and patrons at many events.  And QuikPrint for once again provided us with a substantial discount on printing this Ad Book.

We can’t do this work alone! Your involvement makes a BIG difference.  Every contribution helps, whether it’s your time as a volunteer, or as a subscribing member for the year.  As a member, your voice and vote will help guide and shape our efforts to support the programs you desire for your children.  As a volunteer, there are many different ways in which you can contribute an hour here or there that will help.

Come check us out!  WFAEA meetings for this year are Sep 9, Oct 7, Nov 4, and Dec. 3.  In 2015, our meetings are Jan 6, Feb 3, Apr 7, Apr 28, and Jun 9; and are available via Google calendar: http://bit.ly/wfaea1415cal

Meetings are usually in the Westborough High School library at 7:00 PM. We welcome your suggestions and ideas.

Sincerely,
